Description

Standards/Benchmarks:
SC.912.N.1.2: Describe and explain what characterizes science and its methods.
Essential Question/s: How does one measure the volume of irregularly shaped solids, liquids, what is density and how is it derived?
Lesson Agenda:
1. FCAT Slam: Volume
2. Intro to displacement and calculating density
3. Review glassware safety, handling the balance
4. Volume/density lab
5. Wrap up and write up for homework
How we will learn it:
Explicit Instruction: Share definition of volume > Lecture/discussion: irregular solids, liquids & calculating density
Modeled Instruction: Illustration: common liquids of different densities, displacement demonstration, practice problem on overhead
Guided Practice: Circulate among groups as they complete the lab activity to ensure they are proceeding appropriately.
Independent Practice: Students measure the mass, volume and calculate density for two liquids and one irregularly shaped solid.
Formative Assessment (How we will know we learned it?): Lab write up (for homework)
Relevance/Closure (How will we use it?): Review expectations for write up > Oil spill, dispersant, identifying substances (gold)
NEWS FLASH: I hope everyone is enjoying their well deserved break. Have a great holiday!
