EARTH SCIENCE - METEOROLOGY - THE EARTH'S WEATHER

This second section of our metrology unit covers chapter twenty five in the text and introduces students to concepts, tools, technology and vocabulary of the study of weather. We will devote a significant portion of our studies to examining many of Florida's unique weather patterns and expect that all students will thoroughly understand their local broadcasts and weather maps. By the end of this unit students will demonstrate their understanding of the information below by way of tests, labs, papers and activities.

  • Air Masses
  • Weather Patterns
  • Fronts
  • Weather Instruments
  • Hurricanes
  • Weather Forecasts

Idea's for further study: Build an anemometer. - By poster, paper, presentation or project demonstrate the essentials of hurricane preparedness. - Present the local weather map from the St. Petersburg Times to the class explaining the symbols. - Analyze recent hurricane data to determine patterns in seasonal temperature movement. - Present your own weather forecast explaining the existing conditions and how they lead to your predictions... etc.

Mastery of the information presented in this section assists students in their preparation for F.C.A.T. testing by reinforcing the following Sunshine State Standards.

  • Strand A, Standard 1: Understand that all matter has observable, measurable properties.
  • Strand B, Standard 1: Recognize that energy may be changed in form with varying efficiency.
  • Strand B, Standard 2: Understand the interaction of matter and energy.
  • Strand C, Standard 1: Understand that types of motion may be described, measured and predicted.
  • Strand C, Standard 2: Understand that the types of force that act on an object and the effect of that force can be described, measured, and predicted.
  • Strand D, Standard 2: Understand the need for protection of the natural systems on Earth.
  • Strand E, Standard 1: Understand the interaction and organization in the Solar System and the universe and how this affects life on Earth.
  • Strand H, Standard 1: Use the scientific processes and habits of the mind to solve problems.
  • Strand H, Standard 2: Understand that most natural events occur in comprehensible, consistent patterns.
  • Strand H, Standard 3: Understand that science, technology and society are interwoven and interdependent.
