Standards/Benchmarks:
SC.912.E.7.1: Analyze the movement of matter and energy through the different biogeochemical cycles, including water and carbon.
SC.912.P.10.2: Explore the Law of Conservation of Energy by differentiating among open, closed, and isolated systems and explain that the total energy in an isolated system is a conserved quantity.
Essential Question/s: What is the earth's energy budget and what are the internal and external sources of energy?
Lesson Agenda:
1. FCAT Slam: Thermodynamics
2. Time to complete Cornell Notes (Energy Budget pg. 34 & 35)
3. Review: Open and Closed Systems
4. Word wall review (prepare for quiz)
5. Word wall activity
How we will learn it:
Explicit Instruction: Define Thermodynaics > Review open and closed systems > Share Word Wall content
Modeled Instruction: Review first section Cornell Notes > Illustrate Word Wall activity
Guided Practice: Lead students through synonym/antonym FCAT Slam > Circulate to work with students completing Cornell Notes > Circulate to work with students on Word Wall Activity
Independent Practice: Complete FCAT Slam: Sentence from the book, their own sentence and illustration > Students work in small groups to generate sentences, and then paragraphs incorporating Word Wall vocabulary.
Formative Assessment (How we will know we learned it?): Collect/review Cornell notes > Group share word wall activity
Relevance/Closure (How will we use it?): Quiz tomorrow, increase vocabulary
Materials/Resources: Whiteboard, laptop, projector, colored pencils, paper, pencil, Word Wall Review, Cornell Notes
Alternate Assignment: Generate one sentence for each of the Word Wall vocabulary items that illustrate the appropriate application of the word with correct spelling and grammar. > Develop two logical paragraphs that incorporate at least four of the world wall terms in each.
