Description

Essential Question/s: What are the functions of models in science and why are they important?
Lesson Agenda:
1. FCAT Word Slam: Models
2. Introduction: Models in Science
3. Students generate models list (non-science), characteristics
4. Students, in groups, create model relating to area of study
5. Distribute study guides
How we will learn it:
Explicit Instruction: Share definition FCAT Slam > Discuss common models in science, illustrate examples from recent events.
Modeled Instruction: Illustrate some common models in science and how materials can be used to fashion a facsimile
Guided Practice: Circulate among groups to encourage participation, collaboration and share ideas.
Independent Practice: Students work in groups to create a model related to one of the areas of our study.
Formative Assessment (How we will know we learned it?): Ticket out the door
Relevance/Closure (How will we use it?): Reiterate the importance of models in understanding relevant phenomena: Haiti earthquake, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Climate change, etc.
Materials/Resources: Overhead projector, laptop, paper, pencil, colored pencils, glue, tape, study guide
