EARTH
SCIENCE - GEOLOGY - STUDYING THE EARTH
This first section of our
geology unit covers chapters one through three in
the text and introduces students to many of the earth's
unique characteristics while reinforcing many of the
concepts, principles and skills that have been presented
in their previous course-work. By the end of this
unit students will demonstrate their understanding
of the information below by way of tests, labs, papers
and activities.
- Branches of earth
science
- The scientific method
- Dimensions of the
earth
- The big bang theory
|
- The earths interior
- Gravitational attraction
- Movements of the
earth
- Artificial satellites
|
- Latitude & longitude
- Geomagnetism
- Surface maps
- Topographic maps
|
Idea's
for further study: Build a two or three dimensional
model of the earth's interior. - Create a fishbone
diagram tracing the study of earth science directly
to the related professionals within our community.
- Research current information on the origin of the
universe and write a paper as to how it relates to
your personal convictions. - Re-affirm the laws of
gravitational attraction with an experiment to test
the rate of acceleration of falling bodies. - Create
a topographic map of your neighborhood by your measurements...
etc.
Mastery of the information
presented in this section assists students in their
preparation for F.C.A.T. testing by reinforcing the
following Sunshine State Standards.
- Strand
A, Standard 1: Understand
that all matter has observable, measurable properties.
- Strand
C, Standard 1: Understand
that types of motion may be described, measured
and predicted.
- Strand
C, Standard 2:
Understand that the types of force that act on an
object and the effect of that force can be described,
measured, and predicted.
- Strand
D, Standard 1: Recognize that
processes in the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere
and biosphere interact to shape the Earth.
- Strand
E, Standard 1: Understand
the interaction and organization in the Solar System
and the universe and how this affects life on Earth.
- Strand
E, Standard 2: Recognize the
vastness of the universe and the Earth place in
it.
- Strand
H, Standard 1: Use the scientific
processes and habits of the mind to solve problems.
- Strand
H, Standard 3: Understand
that science, technology and society are interwoven
and interdependent.
