Simulated Wetlands 2 - Wet Highlands

It wasn't long before students realized that we had a problem with our wetlands model in that the areas that were supposed to be dry on top weren't and our "dry foot" plants didn't look very happy. Because the gravel base was just above the water level when the sandy soil was added it quickly filtered down through the rocks slowing the flow and raising the elevation.

Mr. Jim's Fish Farm

My good friend and neighbor, Mr. Jim as the kids know him, decided to try his hand at aquaponics. The idea is to raise fish in one pond and vegetables and vegetation in the other. The waste from the fish pond will provide nutrients for the vegetation and the vegetation will provide food for the fish.

Sounded like too good an opportunity to pass up so I was excited about the chance to lend a hand. Jim got a couple of huge containers from his friend Margaret and we set off to digging a couple of holes.

Simulated Wetlands Project

Mr. Mason

I had the good fortune to participate in the Summer Science Institute this summer at the University of Florida. We spent a good part of one of our days at SEEP (Stormwater Ecological Enhancement Project) where we took a guided tour of a real life example of a how natural agents can be utilized to help treat stormwater runoff.

In the evening we met with Dr. Chuck Lawrence who demonstrated how these concepts could be illustrated in the classroom with materials that we could find at the local hardware store. He said that there was a lot of trial and error, and his is certainly more complex than what I'm aiming for but figured that I'd post the details of the first run. Here's a link to the original blog post about that day during the Summer Science Institute.

Officially A Spartan

Mr. Mason

I'm happy to say that I can officially call myself a Lakewood Spartan. I interviewed last Thursday, got the call from the county last night and confirmed everything today.

My friends and family have known for quite some time that I've wanted to teach at Lakewood as I lived in the community for over a decade and my younger children go to school nearby. I agonized over the decision for a few days but in the end it seemed the right thing to do right now and the opportunity casinospill was just too much to pass up.
